About the X (Twitter) Character Counter

X doesn’t count characters one by one. Links always count as 23, and emoji plus most Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic-presentation and other non-Latin characters count as 2. This counter uses the same weighting, so the number matches what X shows before you post.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your text into the box. Your draft stays in this browser only.
  2. Watch the count and the “left / over” figure update as you type.
  3. Check the table to see which other platforms the same text fits.
  4. Click “Copy text” and paste it into the app.

Tips

  • A post with a link has 257 characters left for text, however long the link is.
  • Urdu and Arabic letters count as 1 each, but emoji count as 2. A row of emoji uses space fast.
  • Threads of posts work better than one cramped post: write the full idea, then split it at sentence ends.

Frequently asked questions

Do spaces and line breaks count?

Yes. Every platform counts spaces, line breaks and punctuation as characters, so the count here includes them too.

Do emojis count as one character?

On most platforms an emoji counts as one character, but some emojis are built from several code points. X counts every emoji as two. This tool counts emojis the way each platform does where that is documented.

Is my text saved or sent anywhere?

No. Counting happens in your browser. Your draft is kept only in this browser so it survives a refresh, and you can clear it any time.
