About the YouTube Description Character Counter
YouTube descriptions can be 5,000 characters long. Only the first couple of lines appear above “…more”, and they also show in search, so this counter marks that cut-off too.
How to use it
- Type or paste your text into the box. Your draft stays in this browser only.
- Watch the count and the “left / over” figure update as you type.
- Check the table to see which other platforms the same text fits.
- Click “Copy text” and paste it into the app.

Tips
- Write a natural first sentence that explains the video; it doubles as the search snippet.
- Timestamps starting at 0:00 turn into chapters automatically.
- Angle brackets ( < > ) are not allowed in descriptions.
Frequently asked questions
Do spaces and line breaks count?
Yes. Every platform counts spaces, line breaks and punctuation as characters, so the count here includes them too.
Do emojis count as one character?
On most platforms an emoji counts as one character, but some emojis are built from several code points. X counts every emoji as two. This tool counts emojis the way each platform does where that is documented.
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No. Counting happens in your browser. Your draft is kept only in this browser so it survives a refresh, and you can clear it any time.
